Dietary supplements, as defined by the DSHEA, include vitamins and minerals, in
addition to herbs and other botanicals, amino acids and other substances that are used to supplement the
diet. Overall, most safety concerns relate to dietary supplements other than vitamins and minerals. This
included 27% who said they regularly used a variety of dietary supplements and 24% who said they
typically used only a multivitamin on a regular basis. Among nurses, 59% said they were regular
supplement users. She would like advice on these dietary supplements.

However, little is known about individuals who routinely consume multiple dietary
supplements. This study describes the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status
of long-term multiple dietary supplement users, and where possible makes comparisons to non-users and
multivitamin/mineral supplement users. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates advertising,
including infomercials, for dietary supplements and most other products sold to consumers. FDA works
closely with FTC in this area, but FTC's work is directed by different laws. Unquestionably there has
been a slow but sustained effort to regulate dietary supplements on an international level. WTO and CAFTA
are part of this effort.
Dietary supplements, protein powders and other formulas are promoted as food
substitutes for losing weight, as health aids and for a variety of other reasons. People are often
confused or misled by the many health claims related to these products. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) regulates dietary supplements as foods rather than drugs, supplement manufacturers are not required
to meet the same strict standards of safety and effectiveness that are required for prescription and
over-the-counter medications. As a result, consumers need to be aware that products may vary widely from
manufacturer to manufacturer in terms of strength and ingredients. Over-the-counter dietary supplements
to treat obesity appeal to many patients who desire a "magic bullet" for weight loss. A schema for
whether physicians should recommend, caution, or discourage use of a particular weight-loss supplement is
presented in this article.
